Retro Design
Design overhaul thought isn’t anything you will find here. It retains the same visual aesthetics as the 2018 model. The same old thick bezels on the sides and curved edges at the back! But these chunky bezels do come in handy to avoid accidental touches on the screen. Plus this nostalgic Touch ID infused home button on the chin is still very convenient to unlock the device, approve purchases, and so on. Overall, like its predecessors, the hands-on feel and feel quality of this Apple iPad 10.2 (2021) is praiseworthy. The curved edges further aid in a comfortable grip while its matte aluminum finish ensures that you won’t have to struggle with excessive fingerprints.
Performance
There are some commendable upgrades in the performance department of the Apple iPad 10.2 (2021). This iPad runs on the A13 Bionic chipset which is the same we see on the iPhone 11 lineup. It offers reliable performance throughout usage. Regarding the storage, Apple has now included base storage from 32GB to 64GB here on the iPad 10.2 (2021). But here, instead of a direct jump to 256 GB, there should have been a 128 GB option as well. Complimenting this powerful chipset is the iPadOS 15, upgradable to iPadOS 15.3 which brings excellent optimization and deep integration with other Apple products.
Display
Okay, on the front of the Apple iPad 10.2 (2021) there’s a 10.2 inches, Retina IPS LCD screen with 1620 x 2160 pixels resolution and 500 nits of brightness. As these numbers suggest, this display gets plenty bright indoors while also staying visible enough outdoors. It is decent enough for casual media consumption. But its 4:3 aspect ratio means movies or YouTube videos don’t particularly cover up the entire area.
You will have to put up with huge blackboards above and below the picture and there is no pinch to zoom videos on YouTube. On Netflix there is! Nonetheless, Apple has finally brought True Tone support on the iPad 10.2 (2021). Essentially. This enables the screen to automatically switch the color temperature based on the ambient lighting. This iPad is still sticking with 1st Generation Apple Pencil support like its predecessor.
Cameras
Apple has gone with a 12-megapixel ultrawide angle lens on its forehead with a 122 degrees field of view. It is interesting especially when complemented with the center stage feature that locks focus to you to keep you at the center during video calls, even when you’re moving around. Plus it is compatible with the majority of video conferencing apps. There’s also an 8-megapixel camera at the back that delivers decent results when taking videos or photos.
Our take
Apple says the Apple iPad 10.2 (2021) is the most popular tablet in the entire lineup. The company has introduced some big upgrades to make this 9th Gen iPad an even more enticing deal. Apple has been generous enough to bump the base storage from 32 GB to 64 GB. But it is still charging an additional fee for the cellular model. What’s also commendable here on the Apple iPad 10.2 (2021) is that Apple still includes a 20W adapter inside the box. If you want to get the most out of this iPad, we recommend getting a good keyboard and a mouse.
