Design and build
The Google Pixel 6a, like the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, stands out from other phone models and its predecessors as well. This is because of its uniquely designed camera bump. It extends as a black bar across the whole back panel. This allows Google to go for a two-tone look with a different color above and below the camera strap. It is available in three color options Chalk, Charcoal and Sage. The camera bump sticks out quite a bit from the back. But at least since it’s all the way across, it doesn’t make the phone wobble.
Display
The Google Pixel 6a’s display is a flat 6.2-inch AMOLED with a 1080P resolution and a punch hole for this selfie shooter. Other people prefer this flat screen to the Pro model’s curved one. But unlike the Pro model, this one does not have a high refresh rate which might be considered a deal-breaker. It is capped at 60Hz. Albeit, the regular Pixel 6a display is quite decent. It’s sharp enough and smooth enough, even without those higher-end specs. Thanks to AMOLED technology you get those nice pictures and there’s HDR 10 Plus support. You also get an under-display fingerprint reader for your biometrics and a high 424 PPI density.
Camera’s performance
When it comes to the cameras of the Google Pixel 6a, this one is probably one of the main selling points for the Pixel 6a. Pixel phones have impressive performance that you can do a lot with. Google Pixel five-camera nets quite a few stunning photos. This one sports a 12.2 MP, f/1.7, 27mm (wide), 1/2.55″, 1.4µm, dual pixel PDAF, OIS main camera lens.
The ultra-wide camera of the Google Pixel 6a captures very good photos with lots of detail although the field of view isn’t as wide as on some competitors. Google Pixel 6a has an 8-megapixel selfie camera and it produces sharp and detailed images with minimal noise. The colors are pleasant and the dynamic range is excellent. Video can be captured with the main camera and up to 4k resolution at 60 FPS. 4k footage is very good with competitive sharpness and detail. The ultra-wide camera’s footage is also sharp and detailed matching the main camera.
Performance
On Google Pixel 6a, there is a choice of 128GB onboard. One of the major developments of this year’s Pixel phones is that they feature the new 5-nanometer Tensor chipset built in-house by Google. This is a move by the company to provide a more proprietary experience, and also to stand out from other manufacturers. Since this is the first generation software-wise, the Pixel 6a doesn’t feel so different from other high-end Android phones. Except for the fact that it runs the new Android 12, which provides things like color themes for your icons and menu.
Google Tensor (5 nm) however does provide neat features like Google’s automatic speech recognition is more advanced than ever before. And real-time translation is becoming even more of a reality. Both in actual conversations, as well as the captions for videos that you’re watching. Google Tensor’s (5 nm) performance is excellent compared to the high-end Snapdragon 888 chipset.
Battery
The Google Pixel 6a does a decent job with this 4410 mAh battery. This capacity is slightly larger than that of Google Pixel 6‘s which is Li-Ion 4614 mAh. It scores an endurance rating of 90 hours in proprietary tests. The phone doesn’t actually come with a charger in the box. Its fast charging 30W gives it a quick 50% in 30 minutes boost. There is however no mention of Fast wireless charging 21W, or Reverse wireless charging as we see on the model we have just compared it to.
